HOUSTON (KPRC) - A sweet girl is getting a new leash on life after she was rescued from a shipping container in Texas for more than a week.

Now, Connie the dog is heading out east where folks are already lined up to adopt her.

“She’s so gentle. Ah, she is so, so gentle,” Connie’s foster Jennifer Wendeburg said.

Connie the container dog is one lucky pooch. Wendeburg said she’s as sweet as can be.

“She’s been great. I have four kids. I have two dogs, a Great Dane and a pitbull mix. She’s been great with them and a cat. So, whoever is going to adopt her hit the jackpot,” Wendeburg said.

Connie’s story is about hope and resilience but comes with its share of tragedy and trauma. Wendeburg said she had puppies in the container with her.

“Yes, she had five little babies with her and unfortunately, they didn’t make it,” Wendeburg said.

Connie was found by chance rescued thanks to some heroes from the U.S. Coast Guard.

“It started as any other morning. We all loaded up and got all our gear together. And we went out to do random container inspections,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian Wainscott said. “Ryan was actually starting to bang on the containers and then we would just hear periodic little woofs.”

Wainscott and Marine Science Technician 2nd Class Ryan McMahon said it was truly a miracle that they found her. It was likened to finding a needle in a haystack.

“Absolutely. No, absolutely. Because there’s tens of thousands of containers moving on that yard at any point in time and for us to find a dog that’s due to be exported out,” Wainscott said.

If they hadn’t found her, there was no telling where she would have ended up.

“If we didn’t find her that day, she wouldn’t have been found at all, that’s what I think,” McMahon said.

The team is still trying to figure out how she got into the container along with several totaled vehicles, likely from a salvage yard here in the Houston area.

But thanks to them, Connie’s journey is far from over. She is now heading to the Forever Changed Animal Rescue in Maryland.

While Connie’s foster said she had five puppies found in the storage container with her, the Coast Guard said she was alone inside.

Meanwhile, Connie is set to fly to Maryland Tuesday, where a long list of people are already waiting to give her the furrever home she deserves.
