They were pretty prevalent in AD&D, the Cat Lord, from the 1e Monster Manual II and the Gord the Rogue novels even shows up in 1e Oriental Adventures as being found in Kara Tur. They were not omnipresent however.I don't remember them being mentioned in 3e on though.
