Nampa Police Chief Joe Huff is retiring effective July 17.

Huff has served as Police Chief since 2016, spending his entire career with the department. In a Nampa City Council agenda item, which includes accepting Chief Huff's resignation, they will also vote to approve Deputy Chief Curt Shankel as Interim Police Chief.

In a letter to the Mayor and the City Council, Huff writes,

The City of Nampa Police Department has been a part of my life since 1978 when my father joined as a Nampa Police Reserve officer. Many of my childhood memories are from this Police Department. My father would bring my brother and I often to the station, but it was not until I turned 14 in 1986 that I was able to become an NPD Explorer Scout. I eventually became a Cadet, a Reserve Officer, and a Nampa Police Officer. The month I turned 21, I was fortunate to be hired as a full-time City of Nampa Police Officer. My entire career has been here at the City of Nampa Police Department, and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every single shift.

The letter says his goals of lowering violent crime, pursuing repeat criminal offenders and instilling accountability have been achieved. Huff thanked the men and women of the Nampa Police Department, the City Council and the Mayor for their support and trust.
