This is a study on the history of the Caribbean, revealing the significant role the region played in the colonial struggles of the European powers since the 15th century. In the 20th century, the Caribbean was again important during World War II, in decolonization wave in the post-war period, and in the tension between Communist Cuba and the United States (US).
Genocide, slavery, immigration and rivalry between world powers have given Caribbean history an impact disproportionate to the size of this small region. It also involves the artistic, musical, literary, culinary, political and social elements that are representatives of the Caribbean people all over the world.
The Caribbean's culture has historically been influenced by European culture and traditions, especially British, Spanish and French. Over time, elements of the cultures of the Africans and other immigrant populations have become incorporated into mainstream Caribbean culture. It has also been strongly influenced by that of its linguistic, economic, and cultural neighbor, the United States.
